First of all let me just say that I love that the Obama administration is using the word "czar". He promised to have a transparent presidency and he is doing just that. I grew up during the cold war where words like czar, comrade or even the name Ivan had negative connotations to them because of their association to a certain communist country. With his usage of the word czar and his promises regarding the "redistribution of wealth" he has been definitely been transparent about what is agenda is. Socializing our country.
This story is just another step in the governments annihilation of capitalism. I, a consumer, had already made up my mind that I was going to buy a fuel efficient car when I made my next vehicle purchase. Yes, I'm an environmentalist and a capitalist (no this is not an oxymoron as most on the left would have you to believe).
Consumers, as they always have, will dictate which direction industry will go in. After the rise in gas prices last summer, people have realized how valuable fuel efficient cars can be. The car manufacturers were behind on their production of these types of cars causing most consumers to go on a waiting list. The car companies know that they were losing money. Since car companies are in it to make money, they have already ramped up their production of fuel efficient cars. Why do we have to have the government dictate to them what the consumers have already said?
The cost of regulations always will be passed down to the consumer.
The cost of all new cars will now go up to compensate for the money the manufactures have to spend to meet this regulation, which will force some consumers out of the new car market. Even when the government offers subsidies to the car companies, where do those subsidies come from? Taxes. The Obama administration is already playing around with taxing sodas to fund its healthcare plan.
Instead of letting consumer pressure work on the car companies, our government will now step in and force them to work the problem out quickly and pass the cost of the haste to the taxpayer.
And why is our government, which will already have to borrow $0.50 for every dollar it spends this year, offering to pay "cash for clunkers"? If someone wants to buy a fuel efficient car, have them save up some money and sell their old car on craigslist. Why does the government have to become a used car lot?
